One of the earliest cultural portrayals of Joan of Arc. The Vigils on the Death of Charles VII is an illuminated manuscript composed by Martial d’Auvergne around 1477 to 1483, as a liturgical poem about the Hundred Years War. The original manuscript is currently preserved under the shelfmark Fr. 5054 at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The BnF manuscript, which was presented to Charles VIII, contains a rich programme of illumination depicting various episodes from the king’s life and his struggle against the English, and contained within it are 6 “miniature portraits” depicting significant events in the career of Joan of Arc.
